CIRENCESTER Seniors recorded mixed results in their two most recent matches.

Ciren saw off the challenge of Lilley Brook 5-2, before slipping up 4-3 at Stinchcombe Hill the following day.

Against Lilley Brook, the previously unbeaten pair of captain David Findlay and Alan Dymond went down by a surprisingly large margin of five and four to Trevor Hawkins and Keith Tarling.

However, John Morris and Rob Johnson won their match by the same margin and further wins for president Robert Evans and John Thurston as well as David Warden and John Hall put Ciren in control.

A reverse followed before Gerry Bruton and Paul Horrell put the match out of reach of Lilley Brook, and Ken Anderson and Gerald Park extended the winning margin with their two and one victory.

At Stinchcombe, the match was not settled until the final green. Cirencester club vice-captain Mark Woodhead and Mike Staples got off to a good start, winning four and three before Bob Allen and Mike Kirman followed up with a two and one success.

Findlay and his vice-captain Clive Bennett were then beaten by Jack Laughton and Terry Munday, before the match was levelled when John Cross and Mike Bishop lost four and three.

A six and five victory by Andy Leith and Roger Dodd put Cirencester ahead but two defeats on the bounce saw the match fall in favour of the hosts.

Meanwhile, Marlborough Golf Club’s ladies defied the blistering heat to don their Victorian finery for an 18-hole celebration of the club’s 125th anniversary recently.

Leg of mutton sleeves, lace blouses, ample bonnets, panama hats decorated with flowers and ribbons and long black dresses were on show throughout the day - despite the warm weather - with two-shot penalties dealt out to anyone who chose to remove a layer.

After hat-removal penalty adjustments, the winning team with a score of 74 points and hats firmly in place was Gwen Stuart, Sue Lyons and Jilly Hunter.

Following their rounds the ladies were joined for tea by past members to revive memories of other happy days at the club.

“We had a great day” said ladies’ captain Sheila Hubie.

“I was so proud of the way the ladies had gone to so much effort in dressing up for the day. They looked quite magnificent.”
