HELLENIC LEAGUE: Purton bounce back to win derby
PURTON came from behind to defeat Malmesbury 4-2 and get the start of their Hellenic League Division One West season back on track.
Off the back of a 6-1 win against Letcombe and a 5-0 defeat to Shortwood reserves, Purton fell behind after 10 minutes at the Red House.
It was Mani Roper that put Malmesbury in front but between the 32nd and 53rd minutes, the hosts overwhelmed their opponents with four goals.
Skipper Marcus Hall got the first when he leathered home a penalty and just before the break, Ash Gooch added a second with a well-placed effort from the edge of the 18-yard box.
In the 53rd minute forward Blaine Fitzgerald was put clear by Scott Campbell and applied a clinical finish.
Ryan Child unselfishly squared for Hall to make it 4-1 before an own goal 10 minutes from time restored some pride for Malmesbury.
Purton midfielder Hall said: “I felt as if we were always going to win the game. We didn’t start off too great but after we got 20 minutes out of our system we started to come into it.
“We knew we had to keep the tempo up after their heads dropped a bit and we did that.
“Shortwood on Tuesday was a bit of a freak result and everyone said the best thing was to forget about it and go in with a fresh attitude.”
Malmesbury boss Gareth Davies said: “We’re a young side and we showed how naive we are on Saturday.
“Once Purton got hold of the game that was it. We got taught a lesson and we need to learn from this and learn from it quick.”
