WILTSHIRE LEAGUE: Lewis hits a brace in great escape
WOOTTON Bassett Town Dev came back from two goals down to record an opening-day victory in Wiltshire League Division One.
Dev trailed 3-1 to hosts Intel in howling wind and driving rain at the break, but four goals in the second period secured a terrific comeback and gave them a 5-3 win and all three points.
Leading the scoring for Bassett was Lewis Petrie with a brace, while also registering were Max Kitchin, Ross Algar, Tom Blackford.
For Dev joint boss Dave Terry, it was the proverbial game of two halves.
“We were playing against the wind first half, it was poor conditions and we knew we would be up against it,” he said.
“The players were possibly a bit nervous because it was the first game of the season, but also Intel were a good side who knocked it around well.
“We were happy to go in 2-1 down and possibly even 3-1, which is what happened.”
At the break a few choice words and a switch of formation from 4-4-2 to 3-5-2 turned out to do Bassett the world of good.
“We had a chat at half-time and changed it round a bit, going to three at the back and five in midfield,” said Terry.
“We told them to keep playing the ball into feet because we knew having the ball in the air wouldn’t be any good.
“In the second half the lads got the ball down and played absolutely superb. Their discipline was excellent and it was a great all-round performance.
“We got a couple of goals and after that we knew it was just a matter of time in terms of finishing them off.
“Bearing in mind we’ve got two players of 24 or 25 and the rest are between 16 and 19, it was a great effort.”
Unlike a number of their Wiltshire League rivals, Bassett have no midweek game.
The Premier Division sees 14 teams in action in midweek which includes early pace-setters Supermarine Sports Club, who travel to Purton reserves on Wednesday.
The remaining 12 teams play tonight, with Southbrook’s home clash with Blyskawica and Wroughton’s game at Wilts Calne Town among the most notable fixtures.
