WOMEN'S FOOTBALL: Spits see off Downend
6:00am Tuesday 27th August 2013 in Sport
SWINDON Spitfires marked their return to the South West Women’s League Premier Division with a convincing 3-0 win at Downend Flyers.
Facing a side that finished third last term, Spits took the lead on 11 minutes. A free kick from deep picked out Ria Salleh in behind the home defence and she slotted past keeper Danni Pearson.
The lead should have been increased soon after when Hayley Huckin broke down the left wing and crossed for Emma Skinner, but the latter could only fire wide.
Downend came close to a leveller when a speculative effort came back off the crossbar, but that was a rare chance for the hosts and Spits keeper Tamsin Kellett had little to do.
WIth the half-hour mark looming, Spits found goal number two, as Debbie Rose set Salleh away and she crossed for Huckin who nodded past her marker before tucking into the net.
Skinner blazed a Huckin cross wide when she had more time when she thought, while Huckin directed off-target from a searching cross by Cara Costello.
Spits killed the game off four minutes into the second half and once again Salleh was involved. Her delivery from the left was half-cleared to Skinner and she sent home a fizzing drive that gave Pearson no chance.
Kellett was forced into action with a point-blank save in the 55th minute and two minutes later she was caught in possession, but recovered superbly to block Kate Michael’s shot.
At the other end Pearson denied Huckin one-on-one and despite creating further chances, Spits were unable to add to their score.
