GB pain for Wildcats duo
6:00am Wednesday 28th August 2013 in Sport
SWINDON Wildcats duo Ollie Betteridge and Sam Godfrey tasted defeat with Great Britain Under-20s in the Cherepanov Cup yesterday.
GB were beaten 3-1 by Kapitan in their fourth game of the competition in Lithuania.
Lewis Hook scored the only goal of the game for Pete Russell’s side as penalties cost them.
GB trailed 2-0 at the first break with one of Kapitan's goals coming on the powerplay.
The Russian side scored again with the man advantage in the second period, but GB were unable to convert a succession of powerplay opportunities of their own.
The gap was narrowed in period three as Hook scored on the powerplay from the slot, assisted by Matt Selby and Josh Cook.
After a timeout in the last minute, netminder Adam Goss was pulled, but there was no further scoring.
Selby was named GB's player of the game.
Coach Martin Grubb said: “I am very proud of how the players played today.
“I thought we deserved something from the game against a very good Russian team.
“We proved that when we execute our system with commitment, we can match any team in the tournament.
“We asked the boys to go out and play with pride and do themselves justice, and they can all hold their heads up high.
“We will be looking to take this performance into the final game and end the tournament with a victory.”
GB finish their tournament today when they face Poland Under-20s (1pm UK time).
