Swindon warm up with a win over Chippenham
SWINDON stepped up their pre-season preparations with an impressive 41-29 victory over local rivals Chippenham.
The Greenbridge Road side raced into an early lead with four tries in the first half an hour against their National League opponents, and managed to continue with a steady stream of scoring to win a fixture they have traditionally struggled in.
Centre Matty Allen managed to cross the whitewash twice as Tom Mannion and Dan McCarthy also managed to touch down last Thursday, with fly-half Westall in good form with the boot.
New head coach Sean Lynn started the game at scrum-half with regular number nine Connal Knott moving to outside centre, and captain Westall was pleased with what his side were able to produce.
“It was a very good result against a side in the league above us, and we seem to play this same fixture every year around the same time and we’ve never really got close before,” he said.
“Sean played which meant Connal moved to 13 which gave us a bit more to our game and a bit more pace, and Connal played very well and was aggressive which is something we’ve missed.
“We went four tries up with four conversions, and at that point Chippenham looked a bit lost and didn’t know what to do to cope with us at all.
“We take a lot of confidence from this and everything we’ve been doing so far, and it’s all useful work looking forward to the start of the league season.”
Swindon are back in pre-season action this weekend when they host Keynsham at Greenbridge Road.
