One win from promotion
SWINDON have their destiny in their own hands when they face Marlborough in the WEPL Wiltshire Division this weekend, where victory will hand them an instant return to the Glos/Wilts Division.
With Burbage & Easton Royal still hot on their heels, the County Ground side cannot afford to slip up against their third-placed hosts but skipper Liam Tucker is confident his players have the right mindset to pick up the win they need to erase the memories of last year’s relegation.
Swindon hold a nine-point buffer over Burbage, meaning even the most slender of successes would be enough to secure elevation, and Tucker said: “It sounds easy, I wish it was that easy. We at least have everything in our own hands this week and it’s a case of getting out there, performing and getting the last victory we need.
“We’ll just go out there and tell them to perform like any other week in the season. If we go out there and do what we’ve done for the other 17 weeks of the year, barring a couple of rain-offs, then we’d back ourselves to do that.
“It’s about having people relaxed and due to the time of the game and how long it takes, people tend to relax into it anyway.
“I’m pretty confident. It’s been the same over the last four or five weeks where we’ve known we’ve had to win each game. It’s not too different, to be honest.
“Knowing a lot of the lads, most are pretty laid back. I don’t think they’ll be too fazed at all.”
Despite his confidence in his own side’s abilities, Tucker is not under-estimating his opponents this weekend.
“They are a very good side,” he said of Marlborough. “They’ve got very good players and they’re a rounded team. They don’t rely on one or two people. They’ve got decent batters all the way down and probably four or five decent bowlers as well.
“It’s not like they’re relying on one or two blokes like some teams, they do actually have a well-rounded team.”
Nigel Dunstan replaces Dan Harris in the only change to the Swindon side.
Elsewhere in the division, Nationwide House will complete their fixture list with a home clash with Trowbridge at Pipers Way.
