HELLENIC LEAGUE: Defensive weakness concerns Highworth boss
JOHN Fisher is delighted with the attacking arsenal at his disposal at Highworth but says his side must tighten up at the back if they are to climb the Hellenic Premier table.
The Worthians have conceded 13 goals in five matches in all competitions this season and boss Fisher knows that is a statistic that must improve.
While Highworth have plenty of talented forward-thinking players on their books including striker Matty Bennett, who signed last night, defence has been more of a problem and the manager admits that this could stop them challenging at the top end if matters do not improve.
“We’re very good going forward, we just need to sort our defence out,” said Fisher.
“We need to defend much better as a unit, I’m not just blaming the back four because there’s four or five in front of them.
“We’ve outplayed the last two teams we’ve played in midfield and they have still managed to get a result against us.
“I’m pleased with the way we’re playing but not the goals we’re conceding. You can’t be conceding threes and fours on a regular basis and we are having to score five to make sure we win.
“We’ve got to look to keep clean sheets, that’s the main concern for me and Kev (Moloney, assistant).
“We’ve played Ascot, Wantage and Ardley and we can match anyone on the football side, but the teams at the top don’t concede goals.”
Fisher’s hopes of a meaner defence have been boosted by the return of centre-back Rory Sproule from suspension ahead of this weekend’s home fixture against Flackwell.
Midfielder Richie Saunders is unavailable due to work while Toby Clark is doubtful with a calf problem.
Elsewhere, Fairford take on Carterton in a rescheduled clash at Cinder Lane.
Jack Allan, Henry Traas and Steve Hall are all away having made prior plans for what was initially a free Saturday.
Boss Paul Braithwaite is waiting on the fitness of Alex Rudd and Rich Stubbs.
