CYCLE SPEEDWAY: Alice in wonderland after British title win
SWINDON cycle speedway star Alice Neighbour put in a superb display to win the British Under 10 Girls title and become the town’s first ever female national champion.
The 10-year-old won the title in Bretford over the bank holiday weekend and in doing so followed in the footsteps of her brother Jake after he won the national under 13 indoor title in 2010.
South Marston Primary School pupil Neighbour fought her way through an impressive field to claim the title ahead of two-time champion Gemma Hill and was proud of everything she achieved.
“I was really pleased to win and I think I did well,” she said.
“It was great to be able to win it but there was one of the races which was really hard because I was up against the reigning champion Gemma Hill.
“She won it last year and the year before, but it was great because I beat her.”
Proud parents Neil and Rachel were at the track to cheer their daughter on and always knew she had a chance of taking the title.
“We are really proud and she did really well, and I managed to keep quiet and not shout too much during the races,” Rachel said.
“She came third the first year she entered and then second last year, and this time it came down to her and one other girl who was going to win it.
“She had already beaten her once this year so we knew she had a good chance of winning but it’s great that she managed it.”
Daniel Harper, secretary of Swindon Cycle Speedway Club, said Neighbour’s victory was a just reward for all her hard work.
“It’s always nice to have a champion connected to the club at any level and Alice did really well,” he said.
“Her brother Jake was the under 13 indoor champion so they have good pedigree and it’s great to see Alice become the first female champion we’ve ever had.
“We’re all really proud of her and she’s a nice girl who comes to training every week with a smile on her face so this is totally deserved.”
