Bassett set to move in at Ballards Ash
YEARS of planning and preparation will finally pay off tomorrow when Royal Wootton Bassett Rugby Club officially open their new facility at Ballards Ash.
Bassett are holding a full day of events to mark the opening with matters beginning at 11am with a High Street procession.
The formal opening ceremony will take place at 12.45pm and that will be followed by two matches, the first being Bassett Colts against Andover (1pm).
At 3pm a presidents’ XV will face an army masters side with the match ball delivered by the REME Parachute Display Team.
There will be food and stalls on show throughout the day and the celebrations will continue into tonight with a 70s disco and fireworks display.
For club vice-chairman Jim Brierley, tomorrow will mark the culmination of a ‘dream’ that the club’s forefathers had more than four decades ago.
And he said that the new facility will go much further than just providing plush surroundings for those involved in the rugby side of the club.
“It’s the end of the road in terms of these plans and ambitions since we started in 1971, it’s always been the club’s plan to own our own ground and have our own clubhouse,” he said.
“This is the realisation of that ambition and the culmination of the dream those guys had 40 years ago. It’s come to fruition now and that is great for everyone.
“A number of those who helped set it all up will be back to celebrate what they’ve achieved and it will be a great day for everyone.
“In terms of providing a facility on the playing side it will be huge, but the clubhouse will also allow us to hold functions and other events.
“We see it as something we want to get the local community involved in because it’s more than just a rugby club. We want to encourage the local Wootton Bassett community to come in and enjoy the facilities.”
Entry tomorrow costs £4 per person for those aged 16 and over until 7.30pm. The evening’s activities are for those aged 18 and over and the cost is £2 from 8pm onwards.
