MOTORSPORT: Swindon's Belcher set for Clio Cup success
6:00am Tuesday 10th September 2013 in Sport
SIMON Belcher could take another step towards retaining the Renault UK Clio Cup masters title at Rockingham this weekend.
The Northamptonshire circuit hosts the penultimate event of the 2013 calendar before matters move on to Brands Hatch next month.
And with four races to go, Swindon’s Belcher is determined to add to his tally of 10 class podiums.
The 39-year-old holds a healthy 24-point advantage at the top of the Masters Cup standings and once the drop score rule is applied - when each driver has their lowest score of the season subtracted from final totals - his lead extends to 44 points.
“It’s been a strong year for us, the races have generally been much better than qualifying and we’ve managed to keep consistently racking up big points each weekend,” said Belcher.
“I’m really looking forward to Rockingham.
“With only four more races to go it’s getting to crunch time and we have to make sure we stay out of trouble and pick up the points we need this weekend.
“Ideally, I want to go out there and try and take some more masters wins before the end of the season, but the priority is trying to retain the title and that’s where my focus is.
“Qualifying is where we have been missing out.
“If we’re able to get into the top half dozen on the grid overall then I’m confident our race pace is good enough to fight for our first outright top 10 of the season as well.”
Following pre-event testing on Friday, qualifying for rounds 13 and 14 will take place at 10.50am on Saturday, September 14, with the opening race of the weekend beginning at 4.20pm.
Race two is scheduled to start at around 2.40pm on Sunday.
