6:00am Tuesday 10th September 2013 in Sport
SIMON Nott set a blistering pace as he triumphed at the inaugural Melksham 10k on Sunday, the 10th race in the Wiltshire Road Race League.
Nearly 200 runners lined up for the two-lap race on a flat and fast course and Calne RC’s Nott triumphed in a personal best of 31:30.
That was the second-fastest time recorded by a Wiltshire athlete over the distance this year.
Two minutes later, Avon Valley Runners’ Michael Towler grabbed second, just ahead of George Frost of Team Bath.
In the ladies’ race, another county 10k champion took the honours. Ruth Barnes of Avon Valley Runners clocked a personal best of 36:15 and just missed out on a club record by one second.
Her clubmate Fiona Price took second with Tracey Horton of Southville Running Club completing the podium positions.
In eighth place overall, Gary Dunstone of Chippenham Harriers claimed the first male vet 40 prize with Jackie Rockliffe of Avon Valley Runners the first female vet 40 runner home.
The first male vet 50 across the line was Gary Eagle (Frome Running Club) and clubmate Anthony Sprules scooped the male vet 60 prize.
Janet Brown of Bitton Road Runners was the top female vet 50 athlete and Rosemary Barber (Avon Valley Runners) won the female vet 60 race.
The performances of Avon Valley Runners’ athletes meant that the Trowbridge-based club retained their Division One title with two races still to run.
The next race in the Wiltshire Road Race League is the Malmesbury Half Marathon on Sunday, September 22.
