Swindon boxer promoter pays tribute to 'tragic' Powell
SWINDON boxing promoter Keith Mayo paid tribute to leading matchmaker Dean Powell who died yesterday.
The circumstances of Powell’s death remain a mystery and Mayo described his passing as a ‘tragedy’.
Mayo entered the world of boxing promotion five years ago and revealed Powell was one of the people he turned to for advice.
Powell was leading boxing promoter Frank Warren’s right-hand man and Mayo says he will be sadly missed by the sport.
“It is a tragedy,” Mayo told the Swindon Advertiser.
“I worked with Dean on several occasions with the shows we have promoted and he was always very good to work with.
“He was on the button when it came to boxing and was known as the leading matchmaker in this country.
“When I was starting out as a promoter Dean was one of the people who gave me advice.
“I remember going up to his office and he was only too happy to help.
“He was highly regarded by everybody within the sport and you cannot believe he is gone, it’s tragic and really puts life into perspective.”
Mayo says he intends to ring 10 bells at his boxing show at the Oasis on Friday night as a tribute to Powell and says it is the least he can do to honour the man.
“We will ring 10 bells for Dean at our show on Friday,” added Mayo. “It is the least we can do and it is an ideal opportunity to honour him.
“Hopefully the show will be a cracking one in his memory.”
