HELLENIC LEAGUE: Vics boss wants defensive improvement
MALMESBURY manager Gareth Davies believes there can be no excuses for defensive lapses after watching his team shut out New College in midweek.
Vics had not kept a clean sheet since the 2-0 opening-day victory over Old Woodstock, but they were 4-0 winners over College in the Floodlit Cup first round on Tuesday.
Davies feels his team can expect further positive results to come their way in Division One West if they continue to retain the defensive discipline and work ethic they showed against the students.
“We want be more solid because we’ve been conceding silly goals at stupid times and that is an expensive way to play,” said Davies.
“When we don’t have the ball we should be working hard and making teams work for their goals rather than giving them to them.
“We’ve certainly worked on keeping our shape and working hard when we don’t have the ball, because it goes a long way.
“We set out nice and compact against New College because we wanted to be hard to break down and not give away any cheap goals.
“There wasn’t anyone that had a bad game and I’m pleased for our keeper Joe Snell because he didn’t get many clean sheets last year, but he has two this year already.”
Malmesbury entertain Easington at the Flying Monk this weekend, a side that currently sit 12th in the table with just one win from their opening six games.
“It would be nice to have a couple more wins under our belt and some points on the board,” continued Davies.
“If we play like we did on Tuesday then I think we’ll give anyone a game. I think it’s a taken a while to see what we’re capable of, but the players realise it now.”
Vics are without striker Terry Moore who has suffered a recurrence of a groin injury and looks set for three to four weeks on the sidelines.
Ryan Welland is available again but faces competition from Lewis Waldon and Scott Chilcott for a place up front.
Davies has snapped up full-back Brad Stanners, who featured against College in midweek after coming off the bench.
