HELLENIC LEAGUE DIVISION ONE WEST: New College boss admits defeat could have been worse
ROB Hopkins admitted New College were lucky not to get beaten by more after receiving a 6-0 thrashing at Tytherington in Division One West.
Sam Taylor netted twice either side of a Toby Colbourne effort to put the Rocks 3-0 up after just 13 minutes.
And Taylor added three further goals in the second half to complete a five-goal haul for himself and a thumping victory for his team.
Manager Hopkins was deeply unimpressed with the display against one of the hopefuls for the league title.
“We were poor all-round, that’s probably the worst we’ve performed in the six years I’ve been there,” said Hopkins.
“To quote Tommy Docherty, we were looking to get nil.
“We were lucky they only got six because they probably could have spanked us by a lot more.
“We conceded three times in the first 13 minutes and it’s an uphill task from 3-0 down.
“Every single department wasn’t up to it and the scoreline reflects that.”
Hopkins has promised that his players will find training hard going this week off the back of the weekend result.
The students can expect plenty of running and less ball work, according to the boss.
“We were sloppy against Malmesbury (in the Floodlit Cup) on Tuesday and it was the same kind of things on Saturday.
“It’s disappointing but we’ll move on,” said Hopkins.
“We’ll have a quick look at what went wrong, it may be a little different in training this week regarding what we do.
“It might well be New College Running Academy in the next few sessions, I’m not sure how much technical stuff we’ll do.
“It won’t be fun, that’s one thing it won’t be.
“We’ll hit them with the stick rather than take the dangly carrot approach.”
