Swindon's Howell fades at KLM Open
SWINDON’S David Howell saw his KLM Open title challenge derail in spectacular fashion as his previously solid game deserted him over the weekend.
The Broome Manor pro carded a four-over-par 74 at Kennemer Golf & Country Club on Saturday and followed it up with one-over round yesterday.
That placed Howell on level-par for the tournament and tied 41st on the final leaderboard.
It could have been much worse for the 38-year-old, who was eight-over through 11 holes on Saturday following a disastrous run that included triple bogeys at the fifth and 10th.
Howell rallied superbly with gains at four of the last five holes but that was only enough to pull him back to one-under overall.
Yesterday the Wiltshireman began in extremely positive fashion and was three-under through five holes.
But five bogeys and one birdie - four of those bogeys coming in the space of six back-nine holes - saw him slip back to one-over for the day.
The end result will be a huge disappointment to Howell given that he joint-led for a sizeable proportion of the first day and was on the brink of the top 10 following Friday’s second round.
