SWINDON TOWN: Club to boost capacity ahead of Chelsea's visit
AN EXTRA 578 fans will be able to watch Swindon Town face Chelsea next week after the club’s decision to install new seating at the County Ground.
Chairman Jed McCrory has moved to fill empty spaces around the stadium with seats in time for the Capital One Cup third-round tie next Tuesday, with the work expected to be finished before Bristol City come calling this weekend.
Two hundred and fifty-two spaces will be created on the Stratton Bank, 260 seats will be added to the Arkell’s Stand and 66 will go in The Town End - significantly increasing the ground’s overall capacity.
The latest initiative is one of several undertaken by the club in recent weeks in an effort to create more room for spectators, with the Members’ Suite capacity currently being increased and a new VIP players’ lounge replacing office space at the bottom of the Arkell’s Stand.
Furthermore, work on increasing the bar space below The Town End will begin today.
McCrory said: “We’re just tidying the stadium back up. We’ve gone round and evaluated where the seating is in the stadium and there are spaces around the ground at the minute which don’t make sense.
“I don’t get why the seating wasn’t there for the punters. We’ve also got the Members’ Suite having the floor laid down tomorrow, which we hope will mean another 30 people can get in there.
“Downstairs will be completed hopefully by Friday, the new players’ lounge, and we start work on The Town End on Tuesday with the aim of having it finished in time for Saturday.
“Then I’m looking at further improvements. It will enable more people to come and watch the Chelsea game and, going forward, it will allow more people coming and hopefully start supporting the club with the style of football we’re playing.
“The Legends Bar will be open on Saturday and we’re looking to increase the size of the bar and the food hatches.”
