SWINDON SUNDAY LEAGUE: Freshbrook go top with crushing victory
6:00am Tuesday 17th September 2013 in Sport
FOUR goals in four minutes just before half-time sent AFC Freshbrook well on their way to a 9-4 victory over Swindon Athletic which took them top of Division Six.
The team only formed at the start of this season but have since gone on to win their opening two games, with their latest success coming thanks to a hat-trick from Junior Small, a Micky Newman brace and strikes from Adam Harman, Craig Clark, Liam Ballard and Liam Packer.
It looked as if the match at Moredon Rec was going to be a tight one as both teams went half an hour without finding the net, but when Freshbrook eventually opened to scoring the floodgates opening.
Athletic managed an equaliser but soon after the home side scored four in quick succession in the lead up to half-time to effectively take the game beyond their opponents, much to the delight of manager Stephen Scargill.
“The first-half was all a bit tight and it was 0-0 after 30 minutes but once we scored four goals we were in control,” he said.
“The only reason they scored four is because we were without our regular keeper through injury but we all did very well.
“We’ve only been together for seven weeks and we’ve made plenty of progress in that time and we are all very pleased.”
Elsewhere in the division a Craig Simmons hat-trick helped Marlborough Casuals beat AFC Royal while Gorsehill Borough were 4-3 winners over CM Automotive to sit joint top of the table.
In Division One both AFC Gas and Trak FC are unbeaten at the top of the table after two games, with Gas beating Inter Sandgate 5-2 and Trak FC running out 2-0 winners over Castrol.
The Running Horse, The Windmill and Blyskawica are all unbeaten in Division Two with Horse the biggest winners of the weekend thanks to their 10-1 success over AFC Tap & Barrel.
PL Motor Service are the only unbeaten side in Division Three thanks to their 4-1 win over Glevum Commercials while Nationwide Pavilion and Eldene top the division below and Chris Daglish scored twice but couldn’t stop Stratton Saints from going down 3-1 to Swindon Asians. Paul Patel, Lee Morse and Dwaine Barrett on target for Asian.
RJ Aerials have won both their Division Five games to sit top of the league, their latest victory coming following their 4-1 win over Nationwide.
