DARTS: Double triumph for McCarthy
6:00am Saturday 21st September 2013 in Sport
SWINDON’S in-form thrower Josh McCarthy enjoyed a successful tournament at the BDO England Classic at Selsey last weekend.
On Friday evening, McCarthy battled through a field of more than 100 players to win the men’s warm-up event, which included a 3-1 semi-final victory over the highly-rated Robbie Green.
The Stratton youngster then kept up his good form on Sunday when he triumphed in the youth competition, adding to the England National Singles Youth title and the Polish Open and Polish Masters titles he won earlier this year.
McCarthy’s next big competition is in October when he makes the long trip to Hull to compete in the Winmau World Youth Masters.
Meanwhile, there was disappointment for McCarthy’s fellow Swindonian Dennis Smith, who suffered defeat on the continent in the latest European Tour event yesterday.
Smith faced Ronnie Baxter in the first round of the German Darts Masters and said beforehand that he was not sure what sort of form to expect from the two-time PDC World Championship quarter-finalist in Sindelfingen.
However, Baxter quickly answered that question as he subjected the Swindon thrower to a 6-3 defeat.
Smith had beaten former PDC world champion Raymond van Barneveld on his previous visit to Germany but was unable to follow that up with a similar result this time round.
