SOUTHERN LEAGUE: Griffin takes the plaudits for Chippenham
6:00am Monday 30th September 2013 in Sport
Chippenham Town boss Steve Winter praised captain Alan Griffin’s performance as he scored all three goals to deliver a perfect remedy to last week’s disappointing defeat against Bedford.
“We had 17 chances last week and put one away, but this week we took our chances, said Winter.
“The big man's got his hat-trick and it was an excellent performance.”
Griffin, back up front after covering in midfield, opened the scoring on 24 minutes, directing Joe McClennan’s drilled ball past Bradley Catlow from inside the box.
He then earned and converted a penalty to double the Bluebirds' advantage on the hour mark and completed his hat-trick ten minutes from time.
Cirencester Town were helped into the draw for the FA Cup Third Qualifying Round with a stunning Lee Smith double. Smith’s wonder strikes secured a 2-0 win over Wessex League side AFC Portchester, to put the Centurions just two victories from facing Football League opposition in the first round proper.
Smith twice gave visiting goalkeeper Lee Hitchings no chance, first after half an hour with an unstoppable volley into the top corner from twenty yards and then just after the break with a shot that curled delicately round the keeper and into the net.
