BOWLS: New campaign kicks off with Villagers win
6:00am Wednesday 2nd October 2013 in Sport
The first short mat bowls county competition of the year was played on, with first stage of the competition featuring 32 entrants drawn into eight groups.
The winners of the groups moved to the Championship with the remainder playing for the County Plate.
The semi-finals of the championship saw Pam and Les Baldry (Crudwell) playing against Chris Smith and Di Sullivan (Villagers) and Bromham pair, Tom Bright and Denise Wiltshire take on Geoff Lane (Crudwell) and Pete Sullivan (Villagers) - last year’s champions .
The Villagers club has only recently been formed and Smith and the Sullivans have returned to regular short mat bowls after a period of retirement.
The Baldrys lost in a very close game with the Bromham two, having earlier enjoyed a convincing win over the Lane/Sullivan pairing.
The final turned out to be a tense affair. Bright and Wiltshire took an early 5-0 lead but the Villagers gradually came back to draw the game at 5-5, making an extra end necessary.
With only two woods of the extra end left, Bromham held three shots and a seemingly impregnable position.
However, Smith produced a dramatic last wood to leave the Bromham skip an all but impossible final shot to win the game.
The Villagers pair of Smith and Sullivan became 2013/2014 County Pairs Champions.
The Plate Final was equally well contested although the result was not so close.
Last year’s championship runners-up Beryl Greenfield and Maureen Collett (Kington Langley) played Andy and Maureen Jelly (Trowbridge), the former ran out winners 10-5.
- The county triples competition will be held at Christie Miller in mid October.
