MMA: Paul ready to bring the Payne at 'Caged' show tonight
6:00am Saturday 5th October 2013 in Sport
PAUL Payne will enter the MECA ring with no fear this evening despite taking his fight with Oskar Rozwens at less than two weeks’ notice.
The 29-year-old from Rodbourne is a late addition to tonight’s Swindon Fightclub ‘Caged’ show as a replacement for injured fighter Adam Evans, who broke his hand in training.
As a personal trainer Payne keeps himself naturally fit, and as a result believes he goes into the contest in top shape despite having limited time to prepare.
“I only took the fight less than two weeks ago, but I live for training and that’s all I do,” he said.
“I haven’t stopped and I train all the time to keep myself ready to fight, so taking it on so late isn’t like I’m just walking off the street because I’m physically and mentally prepared to smash this guy to bits.
“That’s the aim, and I’ve done plenty of research on him. He’s a big guy who likes to throw his hands, and his stand up and ground game are pretty good so it’s going to be a big fight.
“I’m pretty excited about getting in there and seeing what happens, and I’m confident I can win.”
Payne started to learn his trade with Swindon Vale Tudo more than five years ago, and having concentrated more on boxing in recent times is pleased to return to the mixed martial arts scene and find it in such good health.
“I was looking at the level of mixed martial within SVT (Swindon Vale Tudo) and it’s really high at the moment and has come on so much, and it’s something I really want to be a part of and get involved in,” he said.
“I was there at the beginning and started five years ago, and it’s nice to see so many stick with it and become really good fighters.
“I’ve fought professionally before and had two pro fights and some semi-pro ones at MMA, boxing and kickboxing, and in all the different disciplines I have won my last seven.
“That’s given me plenty of confidence, and hopefully I can carry on winning in this fight.”
Tickets for the ‘Caged’ event , which begins at 7pm, are priced at £20 or £40 VIP, and can be bought from any of the fighters involved, The Khyber on Victoria Road, The Forum or at the MECA tonight.
