SWINDON TOWN: Wing role is fine with Byrne
NATHAN Byrne is more than happy being used as a winger by Swindon Town, revealing that it’s not the first time he’s been asked to play ‘out of position’.
The 21-year-old, who joined the Robins from Tottenham in the summer, has been converted from a full-back to a wide man by Town manager Mark Cooper - a role change that he has been handed at other clubs during his relatively brief career.
“When I’ve gone out on loan before I’ve started off as a full-back and at every club I’ve been to I’ve ended up playing on the wing,” he said.
“When I was at Tottenham the full-backs are basically the wingers, so I’m happy to do it and I think it fits the way I play well.”
Byrne was intricately involved in the build-up to Town’s winner against Tranmere Rovers on Saturday, picking out Alex Pritchard with a tidy reverse pass before his teammate was fouled in the box and Dany N’Guessan put away the resultant penalty.
And he was pleased with the way Swindon broke down Rovers’ stiff defence “I made a run across the pitch, Massimo (Luongo) found me and I thought I had to get the ball in the box. I rolled it through someone’s legs and Alex got on the end of it and was fouled,” he said.
“We knew what Tranmere were about, we knew how they were going to play and they sat back and let us play, really.
“We just kept the ball, kept it moving and got the result in the end.
“The manager said before the game if we kept a clean sheet we’d win the game, and that’s what we did.”
Next up for Town is a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Southern Section second-round tie against Plymouth, and Byrne emphasised that the Robins are taking the competition seriously.
“A lot of people think that clubs don’t put their strongest team out or don’t try in the JPT but that’s not the case,” he said.
“We think we’ve got a good chance of winning it so we’re going to go into Tuesday the same way we went into the weekend.”
