WOMEN'S FOOTBALL: Town lose at Plymouth
6:00am Tuesday 8th October 2013 in Sport
SWINDON Town Ladies slipped to a 2-1 defeat in their latest South West Combination League outing at Plymouth over the weekend.
Town made a good start to the game and Argyle keeper Michagla Phillips did well to hold Chyna Collings’ shot from Beth Thompson’s cross.
However, the home side soon began to settle and produced some neat football, and it was Swindon keeper Robyn Levett who was brought into action as she kept out Jayan Rachel’s close-range effort.
Play swung from end to end with no clear-cut chances being created before Plymouth eventually found the net when Emily Mousley took advantage of a mistake in the Town defence to put the home side ahead.
At the other end, Laura McGlone’s shot flew over as the visitors went into the break trailing.
Town failed to withstand a passage of early second-half pressure from Argyle, who were rewarded in the 55th minute when Chloe Bassett doubled their advantage.
This spurred the away side into action and Michele Rich’s attempt from range was well saved before both Ellie Maynard and Beth Thompson went close to finding the net.
In the 68th minute Plymouth were reduced to 10 players when Laura Perrett picked up a second yellow card.
Town took advantage of the depleted Plymouth numbers and Rich fired narrowly over the crossbar.
As the Robins pushed forward they were caught at the back and when Jayan Rachel was brought down in the box Town were rescued when the resulting penalty rebounded to safety off the crossbar.
Swindon’s hard work was finally rewarded in the 80th minute when Ellie Maynard found the net and, having pulled themselves back into the game, the visitors huffed and puffed for the final 10 minutes in search of an equaliser which failed to present itself.
Elsewhere, Swindon Town Ladies reserves proved to be too strong for Lavington in the Wiltshire County Women’s League as they ran out 22-1 victorys.
Amy Jolliffe netted six for the Robins, Hannah Attwell bagged a hat-trick, there were braces for Steph Quince, Alice Smith, Bryn Gallagher and Alex Ramos, and strikes Alex Baker, Amy Cottell, Sara Moreira, Jadie Howton and Karym Coombs rounded off the scoring.
