HOCKEY: Barnes treble sends Bassett top
6:00am Thursday 10th October 2013 in Sport
WOOTTON Bassett rose to the top of the embryonic Davis Wood Hockey League East Central 1 table with a 7-1 thrashing of Swindon B at the weekend.
A hat-trick from Kyle Barnes led the way for the home side, who dominated their guests throughout.
Bassett took the lead when an incisive move set up Chris Lamber to tap home and Kristian Mansfield soon added a second.
Swindon reduced arrears but they didn’t remain within striking distance of their hosts for long as captain Mansfield scored his second of the game and Barnes sent Bassett in at half-time 4-1 in front.
Lawrence Winter notched Bassett’s fifth after the break before Barnes struck twice late in the game to complete his second treble of the campaign.
In the same division, goals from Stu Bell and John Devlin gave Bassett A a 2-1 win over Marlborough B.
Bassett B fought back from two goals down against UWE 4ths to level at 2-2, thanks to strikes from Nick Thompson and James Gregory, but ended up losing 3-2.
Bassett Ladies, meanwhile, also hit seven at the weekend but they were run much closer by BAC in the West Clubs Women’s Hockey League North Division.
Bassett won the game 7-5 thanks to hat-tricks from Emma Collison and Suzanne Lello but they had to withstand plenty of BAC pressure in the process.
Collison opened the scoring after being teed up by Katy Cox but BAC quickly rallied to level. Collison added a second from a short corner before BAC retaliated in kind.
Bassett weren’t about to let up, however, and Lello notched the fourth of the match before Rebekah Taylor gave the hosts a two-goal buffer.
Collison, on her birthday, completed her hat-trick to put Bassett 5-2 up at half-time and seemingly out of sight but BAC hit back in the second half.
However, the visitors were never able to draw level as Lello fired a brace of second-half efforts to complete the victory.
Bassett Ladies’ second and third teams met each other in league action for the first time in Wessex Division One, with the second-string taking the match 3-1.
Helen Bott, Abi Isles and Kelly Lusted got the goals that won it, while Jenny Jones scored a consolation for the third team.
