Saville back for Old Boys after two-year lay-off
SWINDON College Old Boys will welcome back fly-half Ross Saville after almost two years out of the game through injury when they take on Thatcham in Southern Counties North tomorrow.
Saville is set to take back the number 10 shirt he has not worn since 2012 when Old Boys entertain their second-placed guests at Piper’s Way - the one ray of selection sunshine amidst the gloom of an injury epidemic at the club.
A dozen first-team squad members are out of action with various ailments at present, but chairman Martin Peaple hopes the return of Saville will boost spirits.
He said: “Ross Saville has been out for two years with a neck injury but we’ve finally got him back to some sort of match fitness.
“If he can play to the standard he used to we’ll be much better for him. We’ve got a lot of players out at the moment but we’re still manging to get two teams out at the weekend and it’s about getting through this difficult period and through to Christmas. Then we can push on.
“I think the last game Ross played in was the Dorset & Wilts Plate final and in that game he was involved in just about every try that we scored. He’as obviously not match fit but we’ve given him physio and he’s at a stage where he can play.
“He’s still a young kid, really, he’s only in his mid-20s and he should be able to get back to it.”
Thatcham present a daunting test for Old Boys just a week after depleted College made the trip to table-topping Milton Keynes and were soundly beaten 69-15.
“It may be one of those games where we look to get that bonus point,” said Peaple.
“The two bonus points we’ve got this season could be invaluable at the end of the season.”
