Swindon amateurs begin bid for glory
A HOST of Swindon boxers will compete in the first round of the ABA Senior Novices Championships today.
Fitzpatrick’s Boxing Gym have entered four boxers into tonight’s show held at Devizes Football Club while Horseshoe ABC have just one entry.
Fellow Swindon club Walcot have no entries in the Novices Championships itself but have Shehbaz Dastagir competing in a support bout.
Leading the way for Fitzpatrick’s is highly-rated super-heavyweight Luke Watkins who faces a rematch with Gloucester’s Mark Rimmer.
And Watkins will be looking for a repeat performance against Rimmer having beaten the previously undefeated boxer back in May.
Also in action for Fitzpatrick’s are Garvey Kelly, Lee Cutler and Mitchell Dodson and head coach Paddy Fitzpatrick is looking forward to seeing his quartet in action.
“I am excited for them all,” said Fitzpatrick.
“Obviously this is the start of an exciting path for Luke Watkins as we are looking for him to turn professional as soon as we think he is ready.
“We’re not going in complacement but Luke is facing a guy he has already beaten and we would expect him to win.
“Luke will go there and box the way we want him to box and if we get the points decision then great, but we are not worried if we don’t.
“Win or lose Luke will be entered into Open ABAs later in the season. Garvey Kelly, like Luke Watkins, is a full-time amateur boxer now.
“He’s been with me for four and a half years and I am looking forward to watching his progress.
“We have been preparing for these championships for some time now and it is going to be interesting to see how they all get on.”
Competing for fellow Swindon gym Horseshoe is Jack O’Reilly, who is entered into the same category as Fitzpatrick’s Dodson.
Elsewhere, Walcot ABC have Orgest Peroshi in action in the class A (60kg) section of the Ambitions Championships at Broadplain ABC in Bristol Last weekend Horseshoe Gym celebrated three wins in Tiverton with Jordan Willams, Cameron Lampard and Robert Simpkins all claiming victories.
