EQUESTRIAN: Mendoza edged out by pal Ashton
LYNEHAM showjumper Jess Mendoza narrowly missed out on the Young Riders Showjumping Championship title to close friend Chloe Ashton this week.
Mendoza, 17, rode Spirit T to second place at the Horse of the Year show event and Birmingham’s NEC on Friday, recording a time of 33.62 seconds to finish just 1.19 seconds behind Ashton.
The Calne schoolgirl was pleased with her performance overall, but rued one crucial error which cost her the crown.
“I had an early draw so I needed a quick time but couldn’t take too many risks,” she said.
“Spirit jumped an amazing clear but I took an extra pull on the way down to the last which cost me the class.”
Ashton and Mendoza are currently lying first and second respectively in the young rider rankings in the UL and both are making their marks in the Team GB rankings, too.
As of October 1, Mendoza was knocking on the door of the top 20 in 21st place, while Ashton - who is a year older than her rival - lay in 15th.
Mendoza faces a qualifying handicap of not being able to ride in three-star Grand Prix events until she turns 18 in April.
