WOMEN'S FOOTBALL: Town ladies win at Exeter
6:00am Tuesday 15th October 2013 in Sport
SWINDON Town Ladies were able to soak up a barrage of early pressure before eventually securing an impressive 4-1 away victory at Exeter City.
The hosts made all the early running and almost took the lead as Josie Cope’s inswinging corner nearly found the Town net, and although Swindon managed to get the ball down and play another Cope corner saw Lola Sanchez thump a header against the Town bar.
After dealing with the initial onslaught Town took the lead after 17 minutes when Sheridan Palk and Chyna Collings combined to allow Beth Thompson to find the net, and as the visitors continued to gain in confidence they created further chances as Laura McGlone, Sheridan Palk and Thompson all tested Exeter keeper Danielle Bradford.
It wasn’t all one way traffic, though, as Exeter began to hit back with some good spells of possession without ever being able to trouble Town keeper Robyn Levett before the break.
After the interval it was the Town who started the stronger, although City midfielder Leah Brooks went close with a 30 yard free kick, and the Swindon pressure eventually told with 15 minutes to go when Michelle Rich’s free kick was knocked into the net by Collings.
Town didn’t stop there as good build up enabled Collings to score again to secure the win before Ellie Maynard added a fourth after 84 minutes.
Three minutes from time Exeter pulled a goal back when Sanchez took advantage of a defensive error, but it was a job well done by travelling Town.
The club’s reserves beat Marlborough Town 2-1 in the Wiltshire County Women’s League thanks to second half goals from Brin Gallagher and Alex Ramos which cancelled out an early Marlborough penalty.
