Walcot star Jimmy handed England call

WALCOT boxer Jimmy McDonagh has been selected to represent England schoolboys for a match with Ireland later this month, writes DAVE VEYSEY.
The 15-year-old is one of an elite group of eight junior boxers picked for the match, which takes place on Thursday, October 24 in West Port, County Mayo.
McDonagh was delighted to be called up and will be looking to maintain his unbeaten record for England when he steps into the ring.
He said: “I had a good training camp in Bradford last week and was told by the England coaches that I was being considered for selection. It’s been an anxious few days since but we received the call-up letter from the ABA on Monday.
“I’m really looking forward to the contest now, I can’t wait.
“I would like to thank all the Walcot coaches who have helped me in the gym over the years, especially Harry Scott who opens the gym every night for us.”
Last season, after becoming national schoolboy champion, McDonagh made his England debut at the Three Nations Championships.
He beat the Scottish and Welsh champions in his class to win the gold medal.
Chief coach Harry Scott was full of praise for his young charge, saying: “Jimmy has worked hard in the gym for several weeks and thoroughly deserves his call-up.
“He’s a tough guy in the ring, but a quiet lad outside it. Everyone at Walcot wishes him well.”
