HOCKEY: North win the battle of Wilts
NORTH Wilts claimed the bragging rights in the North-West derby with an emphatic 6-1 victory over West Wilts in Davis Wood Hockey League Central 2.
Buoyed by their success against City of Bath a week previously, North Wilts were always in control of the game and took an early lead when Max Bartholomew fired home.
With Cameron Young and James Towers controlling midfield, the hosts carved open the next goalscoring opportunity, which Damian Holland converted, while a neat move involving Towers just before half-time set up Holland for his second and North’s third of the match.
Nigel Clarke’s desperate goalline challenge handed West Wilts a penalty flick after the break, which gave them some meagre hope of getting back into the game, but the home side took their three-goal cushion into the break when Neil Smith made the save, After the interval, North coasted to victory as Bartholomew netted his second and Darren Hillier popped up with a brace - meaning their guests late goal was scant consolation.
North Wilts’ second-string were beaten 7-2 at home by Bath Buccs G.
Trailing 5-0 at half-time, Jake Atkin scored twice in the second period to lend some respectability to the scoreline.
Meanwhile, North Wilts Ladies 2nds were beaten 3-0 at home by Wick in West Clubs Women’s Hockey League Berkeley Division 3, with Wick scoring three second-half goals to claim victory.
