Peroshi gets season off to a flying start
6:00am Thursday 17th October 2013 in Sport
WALCOT boxer Orges Peroshi made an impressive start to the season with victory in the regional round of the Ambition Championships in Bristol, writes DAVE VEYSEY.
The 15-year-old encountered the more experienced Jacob Durrant from Paignton ABC in his class A (60kg) contest, but from the opening bell the Ridgeway pupil attacked his taller opponent with heavy left and right hooks.
He landed with several telling blows during the opener to give the himself a healthy points lead, while the middle session again saw Peroshi on the attack with hooks as the Devon fighter did well to stay upright.
During the final two minutes Durrant enjoyed some success with his counter-punching strategy, but the Albanian-born Walcot boxer was always in control.
At the end of three impressive rounds Peroshi was awarded a unanimous points verdict by scores of 22-16, 19-12 and 14-12.
He said afterwards: “I am very happy to have won the Western Counties stage, and I look forward to the next round in two weeks’ time.”
Elsewhere there were narrow defeats for clubmates Shehbaz Dastagir and Mikey McDonagh.
At Devizes, welterweight Dastigir made his debut for Walcot against Olly Horney from the host club.
The 15-year-old started well, scoring with left jabs and straight rights to comfortably win the opening round.
The next two rounds were closer but the Swindonian appeared to do enough to secure the victory.
However, to the dismay of the Walcot camp, Horney was awarded a majority points verdict.
Meanwhile, at the Pleck ABC Dinner Event in Walsall, McDonagh met Lewis Morris from the host club in a battle of unbeaten 11-year-olds.
After three action packed rounds Morris edged the points decision.
