Will the price be right for striker Nicky?
MARK Cooper expects Peterborough United to drive a hard bargain with Swindon Town if the Robins pursue Nicky Ajose permanently in January.
The Town manager, who branded Ajose “one of the fittest players we’ve ever seen” in an exclusive interview with Advertiser, is believed to have the option to take Ajose on full-time when the transfer window opens at the turn of the year.
However, Ajose still has 18 months remaining on his contract at Peterborough and, having splashed out £300,000 on the former Manchester United trainee in 2011, Cooper thinks Posh will look to recoup a good chunk when the 22-year-old moves on.
No decision has yet been made on whether or not Swindon will make a formal approach to land the frontman on a permanent deal, though, and when asked by the Adver if it was too early for negotiations, Cooper said: “I think so, bearing in mind we’re dealing with Peterborough.
“They’ll probably want five million quid for him. I’m sure Barry (Fry, Peterborough’s director of football) will have something to say about it.”
Ajose is averaging a goal every 108 minutes for Swindon and has scored four times in his five starts for the Robins, including a double in the derby day victory over Bristol City last month.
However, the striker has struggled to hold down a regular spot in the starting XI under Cooper, who insisted he has been delighted by the forward’s attitude and contributions during his brief spell in Wiltshire.
“We look at the opposition and try to pick the best team we think can hurt the opposition.
“While you’re winning it’s easier to explain but he’s got every reason to come and ask why he’s not been playing,” said the Town boss.
“He will be involved again on Tuesday and he’ll get his chance.
“One thing about him is he’s got an unbelievable attitude, he’s the fittest player and one of the fittest players we’ve ever seen.
“He’s the ultimate professional and he’s been brilliant, he’s been great since the moment he walked in and we’re pleased to have him.”
