HELLENIC LEAGUE: Bassett fail to weather another storm
6:00am Wednesday 23rd October 2013 in Sport
For the second time in four days Wootton Bassett Town failed to finish a Hellenic League Premier Division fixture as their trip to Thame United was abandoned at half time following a dramatic thunderstorm which quickly waterlogged the ASM Stadium pitch.
On Saturday, Bassett’s match at Cheltenham Saracens was curtailed 10 minutes into the second half with the score at 1-1. And Jeff Roberts’ side will be cursing their luck again as they led Thame 1-0 before the heavens opened.
After successfully seeing off a period of sustained Thame pressure, Alex Rigley took advantage of a sliced defensive clearance following a dangerous Adam Corcoran cross, producing a cool finish on 33 minutes.
The visitors' lead could even have been more as Corcoran forced a fine save from the home keeper before Sam Packer sent a shot just past the post.
But then the Gods intervened, unleashing a storm that would make even Thor cower.
Highworth escaped the worst of the weather to canter to a 4-0 win over Newbury at the Elms.
TJ Bohane opened the scoring and Brad Clark nodded in a second before Matt Fusco was sent off to wreck any chance of a comeback from the visitors.
Richie Saunders popped in the third after the break and Toby Clark completed the scoring.
In tonight’s Hellenic Premier Division action Shrivenham travel to Cheltenham Saracens.
