Swindon's Brown urges side to tighten up at the back
6:00am Friday 25th October 2013 in Sport
SWINDON might be riding high in South West 1 East but full-back Cameron Brown has admitted that the Greenbridge Road side must stop leaking points at the back.
Second only to the undefeated Oxford Harlequins in the standings, Swindon nonetheless have a generous defensive streak which has seen them concede an average of 31 points a game in their opening seven fixtures.
That means Sean Lynn’s troops possess the third-worst defensive record in the league and full-back Brown believes this an area which must be improved if his side are to compete with Oxford at the top of the table.
The 24-year-old is hoping that this defensive solidity will begin to manifest itself when Swindon travel to Witney tomorrow.
“I think in terms of points conceded we’re one of the worst in the league and we did get the thumping away to Oxford which didn’t help our defensive record,” said Brown.
“Everyone was slipping off tackles and it was one-on-one tackles that let us down.
“We can’t afford to miss those.
“We can always score tries. The scrum is going really well and the kickers in the team are allowing us to play in the right areas, but we know we need to tighten up defensively.
“We’ve done a fair bit of work on that in training.
“We definitely know how to win games but if we can tighten up in defence then we’ll be a really threatening team this year.
“Last year we had a bit of a hiccup at Witney and ended up losing.
“We didn’t really play very well and so we’re looking to put that right this week.”
Brown also admits that Swindon need to learn to be better frontrunners and cited last Saturday’s 48-24 win over Salisbury as an example.
“We were playing really well but we let Salisbury back into the game in the second half,” he said “We should be applying pressure when we’re on top and then we can put away these teams.”
