SKATER HOCKEY: Mixed results for Flames teams
6:00am Tuesday 29th October 2013 in Sport
THE final day of the SASH season at Spiceball Leisure Centre in Banbury saw mixed fortunes for Swindon Flames teams.
Flames Juniors were defeated 6-2 by Oxford Hurricanes in a dead rubber, with the latter having already secured the championship while Swindon were guaranteed second place.
Juniors pushed forward at every opportunity but were unsuccessful with their shots on goal and were 3-0 down at the break.
In the second period Juniors’ Harry Lane and Jack Townsend both scored, but despite the impressive defensive display of Jack Hayes, Oxford added a further three for a comfortable win.
Flames Youths triumphed 7-2 against Oxford Tornadoes, denying their opponents the chance to secure third place in the league.
In a testy encounter, Oxford took an early lead but Swindon soon levelled and roared away to 4-1 up at half-time.
In the second period Oxford narrowed the gap but the Flames then extended their lead to put the game beyond their opponents.
The result meant that like the Juniors side, the Youths finished second in the table and therefore earned their place in the national championships at Rotherham.
Juniors players Jack Townsend, Alex Baker and Will Harding were selected for the dream team while Jacob Elliott-Latham was chosen for the youth equivalent.
