DARTS: Haines in fight for PDC survival
JOHNNY Haines knows his place on the PDC Tour is on the line as he prepares to compete in Wigan today.
The Swindon player is in action in the latest round of Players Championship events at the Robin Park Tennis Centre, one of just two weekends left to earn prize money before the end of the year.
Once the year is over the top 64 players in the PDC rankings are automatically handed tour cards for next year, with the remainder having to go through Q School, and with Haines currently sitting 66th he knows he still has work to do.
“There are two weekends left to try and pick up money which are going to be really important for me because I don’t want to have to go to Q School again,” he said.
“That wouldn’t be good at all because I have worked so hard to get here and it’s going to be even harder next year because there should be some really good players going to Q School.
“I’m 66th at the moment so it’s really tight at the moment and I really need to boost myself up a bit because there are some more players coming over from the BDO for next year too.
“If your luck goes you luck goes, and hopefully I can be lucky this weekend.”
Having reached last year’s World Championship a place at Alexandra Palace this time around looks a distant dream for Haines, who admitted his recent struggles have been down to missing his doubles.
“It’s not been going great recently because I’ve been missing a few doubles and I’m struggling a little which is just one of those things,” he said.
“It happens to everyone from time to time and the only way to sort it out is to play out of it. I just have to keep playing and then it comes back and patience is the key.
“The top 16 in the world aren’t there this weekend so maybe it will be a bit easier, although there are no easy draws at all and every game is tough.
“Hopefully I can have a big weekend and pick up some prize money which would be really helpful.”
Swindon players Dennis Smith, Mark Cox and Chris Aubrey are also in action in Wigan this weekend.
