BOWLS: Westlecot back in business
WESTLECOT’S mixed team bounced back from their swift exit in the National Top Club competition with a comfortable victory in the Egham Trophy, writes DAVE EATON.
In their first round tie last Sunday the rink honours were shared 2-2, however, Westlecot easily overcame Gloucester despite losing on both of the home rinks but winning overall by 21 shots as they ran-out 86-65 victors.
The success was built on the excellent performances produced by the two rinks skipped by Neil Smith and Chris Cheesley away at Gloucester Leisure Centre.
Smith’s quartet led 15-4 at 10 ends and then just powered away to a comfortable 30-8 success.
Alongside, Cheesley’s four were 17-3 up at ten ends and finally won 24-12.
This big 34 shot success more than adequately compensated for the three shots loss sustained by Dave Snell’s rink and the 10 shot reserve suffered by Terry Walton’s foursome at home at Westlecot.
Across the board, Westlecot made a good start and led 21-11 at five ends and 49-27 at 10. They retained their advantage to lead 66-45 at 15 ends and 74-59 at 18 before finally winning 86-65.
In the second round next Sunday, November 10, Westlecot will face Carterton who received a walk over in the previous round with Malvern Hills withdrawing.
Attention now switches to this weekend with Westlecot’s men’s team facing MidGlos today in a first round Denny Cup tie at 10am.
Two rinks will be played at home at Westlecot, with the other two taking place at Brockworth, Gloucester.
Tomorrow also sees Westlecot men face Oxford City and County in their third east region group match of the 2013/14 season in the men’s Wessex League regional competition.
Nine clubs will compete in this group - Banbury, Carterton, Chipping Norton, Loddon Vale (Basingstoke), Oxford & District, Oxford City & County, Rivermead (Reading), West Berks (Newbury) and Westlecot.
To date the Old Town Swindon indoor club have played two matches with sharply contrasting results.
They thumped Chipping Norton 108 (15pts) – 54 (1pt) in their opener but then crashed to their first ever defeat at the hands of Loddon Vale losing heavily 65 (2pts) – 91 (14pts).
Despite the one loss, Westlecot are fourth in the east region table and will be looking to bounce back tomorrow and post another victory in order to stay in touch with early leaders West Berks and Loddon Vale.
