SWINDON Supermarine assistant manager Lee Spalding made a cameo appearance as the South Marston side drew 1-1 at Bridgwater in Southern League Division One South & West.

The 41-year-old entered the fray for the final 20 minutes at Fairfax Park after an injury to Chris Taylor saw Sam Morris shift into centre-midfield and Spalding slot in at right-back.

Honours were shared after Daine O’Connor’s hooked effort just after the half-hour mark was cancelled out by the returning Ash Edenborough’s classy finish from Josh Parsons’ pass just before the break.

Marine are now without a win in six games, but they have drawn their last two outings and boss Dave Webb was content with this latest effort.

“I was really pleased with a point although I thought we did enough to win it as we had some good opportunities in the second half especially,” he said.

“The level of performance and the way the lads stuck together was really pleasing, they worked hard and you could see they were desperate to get that win. There were lots of positives.

“It’s funny in football, that was probably a game we would have won last year but things aren’t quite going our way. I think we did everything except put the ball in the net for a second time.

“Lee still keeps himself in good shape and was a very good player in non-league back in the day.

“Talking to him afterwards you don’t realise how difficult it is to play after a long time away, the game is so quick and it’s not easy.”

Now Marine have formally reunited the duo - Edenborough and Parsons - that got more than 50 goals between them last season, Webb can only see the pair going from strength to strength.

“It was great to have Ash back (from a back injury) because we’ve missed him in the last few weeks,” said Webb.

“Josh Parsons is getting back to what he’s capable of and those two were exceptional for us last season. When they are both back to full fitness they will be a threat in this league.”

The less positive side to the day was that Taylor suffered a recurrence of the knee injury that has been bothering him of late.

The midfielder is now a doubt for Saturday’s trip to North Leigh, while Eddie Stevens also exited the action with a minor knock.

Webb is hoping that full-back Mani Randhawa will recover from a dead leg this week, while the experienced Kyle Lapham could still be a fortnight away from a return.
