LADIES' FOOTBALL: Town Ladies climb to summit

SWINDON Town Ladies stormed to the top of the South West Combination League with a comfortable 4-0 victory at home to Newquay.

Ellie Maynard struck twice while Georgia Walters and Sally Butterfield also found the net to move Town a point ahead of both Plymouth and Chichester at the top of the table.

The home side started the stronger but it was the visitors who had the first real chance of the contest as Lucy Bounsall’s shot looked to have beaten keeper Robyn Levett, although Amy Baker was well-placed to hack the ball off the line.

Georgia Walters got things going for Town as her wicked curling shot flew past the post, but they were soon in the lead when Maynard neatly headed in Chantelle Lovell’s cross.

After slipping behind the visitors hit back and Chyna Collings did well to head clear Bounsall’s dangerous free kick, but Town were soon on the offensive again as Beth Thompson cut in from the right and let off a shot which Carley Barber managed to tip onto the bar.

Walters ran though the visitors’ defence but keeper Carly Barber saved at point-blank range, but Town had to be on their toes as the lively Katy Barber again beat the defence before keeper Levett saved at the second attempt.

Both keepers were in action early in the second half, with Carly Barber saving well from Town forward Maynard and Levett keeping out Katy Barber’s low drive, but in the 55th minute Town doubled their lead when Walters scored after latching onto Michelle Rich’s through-ball.

The third arrived just a few minutes later when Collings found Butterfield wide on the left and the winger, who had just come on as a substitute, cut inside to blast the ball into the roof of the net.

With 25 minutes to go Town got their fourth when Maynard poked in Beth Thompson’s corner and Thompson looked to have made it five, but her late effort struck the post.

The Town reserves beat Swindon Spitfires reserves 5-2 with goals from Becca Ash (2), Karyn Coombs (2) and Sophie Jones.

  • WOOTTON Bassett Town Ladies had Emily Bogg to thank as her brace secured a point in a thrilling 2-2 draw with AEK Boco Ladies.

Bassett came from behind twice in this Gloucestershire County Women’s League Division 1 clash, in which Bogg played a starring role.

Her two goals, both stunning strikes from long range which found the top corner, ensured the gap between Bassett and ninth-placed AEK Boco remains at five points.

November had not been a happy month for Bassett, with three straight defeats seeing them slip towards the lower reaches of league table, but another point will help keep them in touch with their nearest rivals.
