FLOYD Taylor was wedged under a kitchen sink moments before receiving the news he had been given a last-minute call into the Great Britain Under 20s squad.

The Wildcats third-liner was offered a spot in the World Championship (Division 2A) line-up by head coach Pete Russell while performing his day job as a plumber for Ideal Plumbing Solutions.

Josh Cook’s enforced withdrawal on eligibility grounds meant Russell instead chose Taylor, who was unable to attend several GB selection camps in the summer after undergoing a shoulder operation.

“I couldn’t do a lot during the summer and missed a lot of the camps due to a shoulder operation, so I kind of expected not to be picked initially,” said Taylor.

“I missed the first three camps and that was where all the picks were being done, so I was lucky to even go to the other camps as sometimes they don’t let you.

“I was pretty happy to be selected in the end as when I found out I was only a reserve I wasn’t overly pleased, because I thought I was better than some of the players in the team. I’m not too sure how much ice time I’ll get because the lines haven’t been decided, but it’s up to me to prove myself and I’m looking forward to it.”

GB Under 20s begin their World Championship campaign against Italy on Monday in Dumfries, Scotland, following friendlies against a Scottish Elite Select on Thursday and Solway on Saturday.

Taylor has not featured for the Under 20s yet but he captained GB Under 18s to fourth at the World Under 18 Championship in March and April.

The 18-year-old is set to turn out alongside Swindon teammates Ollie Betteridge and Sam Godfrey in Scotland, with the trio missing Wildcats’ next three EPL games against Manchester, Sheffield and Basingstoke.

“I think Under-18s will help me out as I’ve played at that level in a World Championship and have the experience,” said Taylor.

“I know what it’s going to be like so I can cope with the pressure. It will make it easier for me with the likes of Ollie and Sam being there, it just makes it more home-like as I train with them every Tuesday and Thursday.

“There won’t be many people there (for Swindon) for this and next weekend, being as there’s three of us and I think all three are quite important players to the team
