KELVIN Young will ‘outbox’ Alexey Ribchev tonight en route to winning the IBO Intercontinental crown, according to his trainer Richard Farnan.

The Swindon super-middleweight faces the biggest test of his career against the Bulgarian champion but Farnan is confident his boxer has all the tools needed to outclass his rival.

“We will outbox him,” claimed Farnan, who has trained Young since the turn of the year. “Our plan is for Kelvin to outbox him by jabbing and moving and getting in and out quickly.

“If we do that then he won’t be able to get his shots off. Kelvin is far too sharp for him and will catch him on the counter.”

Farnan refused to underestimate Ribchev, who has impressed in defeat against British stars Brian Rose and Chris Eubank Junior, but believes he has the right gameplan in place to see off the 31-year-old.

“We know he is durable and we are expecting to go the full 12 rounds,” said Farnan. “He is fit enough and we expect him to get frustrated and jump on Kelvin at some point.

“He is explosive and he has a few knockouts on his record, so we are not going to try and trade with him.

“I’ve studied every punch he has and he predominantly uses the right hook so we have to be wary of that shot and get in and out and make sure we only take that shot on the gloves.

“We are not taking anything for granted but Kelvin should be too sharp for him and should catch him on the counter.”

Although Farnan doesn’t want to think past tonight’s big fight, he claimed victory for Young will place him on a new level, adding: “It’s massive. If everything goes according to plan then it catapults Kelvin into a different league.

“We are under no illusions and cannot think too far ahead, but if things do come off how we expect them to then who knows what the future holds for Kelvin.

“This belt is one away from the world title belt and if we had the chance to fight for that then we could not turn it down.”

Farnan also revealed Young is is in the shape of his life ahead of the much-anticipated contest this evening.

“I’m 100 per cent happy with how training camp has gone,” added Farnan. “Training has gone perfectly.

“I’m biased but I really think Kelvin has come on. He is stronger as well and in his last sparring session with Carl Froch, he took the middle of the ring and took the fight to him.

“Kelvin has also been sparring Sam Couzens, who he beat in his last fight, and Sam has said he is already hitting harder than when they fought.

“We are ready to go the 12 rounds but I really wouldn’t be surprised if Kelvin starts stopping people soon beacuse he definitely has more power now.

“He has had 12 months to grow into the super-middleweight physique and now I think he is almost there.”
