SWINDON TOWN: Loanee Ajose unsure on future

Swindon Advertiser: Town's Nicky Ajose, left Town's Nicky Ajose, left

NICKY Ajose remains unsure where his future lies as his loan spell at Swindon Town edges closer to completion.

The Peterborough frontman joined Town in August and has since scored eight goals in 16 appearances to firmly endear himself to the Robins’ fans and management.

Ajose’s deal with Swindon expires in the new year and Posh are expected to drive a hard bargain with Swindon if they want to extend the loan until the end of the campaign or take the striker on permanently.

For the 22-year-old, who has not spoken to the Peterborough hierarchy about the situation, the circumstances are hardly ideal.

When asked what might happen in January, Ajose said: “I’ve no idea. It’s not ideal, I can’t say that it’s the best situation to be in, obviously everyone likes to have their future sorted but I’ll just try to train every day and try to do well to give myself the best possible platform for the future - wherever that may be.

“What we’ve got here is great management staff, a young team who are all trying to develop their careers and I think it’s been good for me.

“I think it’s brought out some good play from myself, I’ve enjoyed my time here and obviously I’m not finished yet - I’ve still got a few weeks left. I’m just going to enjoy every game and every session.

“I don’t really have much contact with them and I don’t think I’ll be talking to them about much. It’s not something I can really control. I’ve just tried to do my best on the pitch when I’ve played and it’s up to other people to sit around the table and talk about.”

Ajose is expecting a physical test from Stevenage in the southern section area final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tonight.

“Last time I remember playing Stevenage when (Graham) Westley (Stevenage manager) was there it was like Land of the Giants,” he said.

“They are very competitive and robust and you know you’re going to be in for a tough game, but they do have quality at the top end with players like Luke Freeman and Lucas Akins - I’ve played against them a number of times.

“They are dangerous and it’s more about we play. If we play near to our maximum we feel we can win the game.”

Personally I'm unsure on you too Nicky. He has proven that he can score goals but like Collins last season he will also miss a few good ones too (rounding the goalkeeper against Carlisle comes to mind). The guy's got pace but would we really want to spend a decent bit of money on him?, we are in a tough financial situation as it is so we need to be shrewd with how we spend. We have Storey and Jackson who are coming through so I think that this means that El Gabas and Ajose will go in Jan, thanks but no thanks IMO.

Totally disagree with the comments above - I think Nicky has been great for us and pretty clinical

He had an off day in terms of finishing against Carlisle but his overall play was great

I think he has proved himself and would be a fantastic addition to the squad, especially with the uncertainty of Nile at the moment and his looming court case

Totally agree.

He can score goals, but has no physical precence and is easily pushed off the ball and has no effect in the air.

I personally would not buy him.

Lest sort the back out first

Have to admit to agreeing with you here, too often Ajose goes missing in a game, don't get me wrong he seems to have an eye for goal but can't hold to ball up like Ranger and is lacking in physical strength. If he was on a free transfer then a definite yes but I expect Peterbro to ask for a pretty large fee and frankly I don't think it's worth the gamble.

Obviously he is a different type of player to Ranger, but 8 in 16 is decent and I would like to see him stay if possible.

Hopefully yesterday's Q&A with Power will be publshed in due course - some very interesting comments. Among them apparently Barry Fry has been on phone saying bids coming in for Ajose although no numbers mentioned. Posh currently pay some of wages, if they want all from Jan its a problem.

Living in the east of England I can only base Ajose's performance on two away performances at Colchester and Crawley. I must say I was impressed. Very pacey and skilful. His anticipation and quickness to bag his goal at Colchester was top class. Unlucky to get a goal disallowed at Crawley but perhaps should have scored rather than hit the post with a later effort. However all players have off days, like the Carlisle game. I remember Don Rogers had many an anonymous game!!

Wilesy, you can hear the whole thing on "BBC Wiltshire Listen Again". Just type that into a search engine and you should get there OK. I didn't think it was all that enlightening. It mostly confirmed what he said in the statement the other day. The bit I liked best was when he said he was scared (or words to that effect) of playing against Shaun Taylor!

I thought Power could have expanded a bit on some points. To be fair though, there's only so much you can cram into an hour.

Grounds for cautious optimism I think.

Has looked very good to me and a useful player to have in the squad. Wouldn't like to lose him, also he sounds like he genuinely wants to be here (not surprising I suppose given Peterborough's apparent lack of interest but still nice to hear).

Hopefully this won't be distracting for him and will have the opposite effect, spurring him on to some fine performances as he plays for his future.

Thanks for the link, I read through the Trust's tweeted headlines last night.

Haven't compared statements to Q&A but the bits I thought interesting were -

The Flint money bought Luongo (so not the Chelsea windfall)

Paddy Madden would be here but his agent blocked it

Pritchard likely to leave in Jan - lots of interest - will cost £1m (which we may have stumped up if in Championship)

Jed has option to purchase shares but Power owns 99%?

Luke Rooney in discussion with Crawley also may even consider playing part time

More than one Prem club interested in sending us players on loan in Jan

Navarro may be retiring soon, insurance companies being consulted

If bigger club comes in for Wes he can go - part of the new deal he signed

Adam Rooney and Comazzi issues still ongoing

So potentially it looks likely we will be losing Ajose, Pritchard and Wes in January, so all change again. Also maybe Luongo judging by the other story? Yes we may get silly money for Wes and Luongo but combine that with maybe a change or two in defence and possibly losing Ranger then half the team could be different which wouldn't be too clever imo.

I wouldn't expect Barry Fry to let us have him for nothing, they would want to re-coup as much of the £300K they paid Utd for him as they can. They obviously didn't send him out on loan to just get match fit, if they can't be bothered to even speak with him, I would guess they don't want him back, what they get for him could depend on who else is interested and how much time left on his contract. Ability wise I would put him in the same bracket as Byrne who was nearly out of contract, so between £100K to £150K max.

As others have said, beefing up at the back is more of a priority.

Lots of ifs and buts and none of it too surprising. The club is in transition. There's bound to be a lot going on and we're in no position to turn down decent offers for our players.

Re the shares, I believe he said he owns 99% (presumably the 1% interest is held by supporters - LR and others) and McCrory has the option to purchase 39%, which would reverse the shareholdings of McCrory and Power before the takeover?
