SWINDON TOWN: McEveley content with displays

Swindon Advertiser: Town's Jay McEveley Town's Jay McEveley

JAY McEveley knows he may not be every Swindon fan’s cup of tea but the left-back is pleased with the performances he’s been produced in recent weeks.

Having been on the end of some criticism at the beginning of the campaign, the experienced left-back has become a key component of a Town defence which has shown improvements in recent weeks, as well as playing a vital part of Mark Cooper’s attacking unit with his mazy runs from the back.

From his own experiences as an Everton fan, McEveley knows how supporters sometimes take time to warm to players but is pleased with his current form.

“I feel like I’m playing well, although you’re not always everyone’s cup of tea, that’s life and football, and I’m pretty sure I’m the same when I look at Everton,” he said.

“There are certainly a few players over the years who I thought I didn’t fancy but I’m mentally strong enough for that not to affect me.

“I know what I’m good at and if I can play to them I will be alright and we can go on from there, I’m doing that at the moment so long may it continue.”

McEveley is one of the more vocal players in the Town side and can often be heard barking orders above the noise of the crowd, and the defender believes the input of both him and Darren Ward is helping the young players in the squad.

“As you get older you sort of know the shape of the team and the situations that can happen on the pitch, and where people need to be, and organising and talking can make things a lot easier on the pitch,” he said.

“If someone is in front of you or someone in midfield is out of position and they pass through and break the line it is a bit difficult, so if you get yourself compact and keep them in front of you it’s a lot easier as a defender.

“Wardy’s always talking and I’m always talking, trying to get people in positions, and that makes our life a bit easier as well as theirs.

“That’s what we’re trying to get into the lads here at the moment, although it’s hard when you’re young, but they are doing better now and they’re starting to understand what’s going on.”

McEveley also suggested it can be hard for the likes of Ryan Mason and Massimo Luongo to adapt to the more ugly side of the game, given they are used to playing possession football during their education at Tottenham.

“It’s hard to rein them in because they want to go forward and score goals and create chances, but you have to look at the top, top players and they do the defensive side as well,” McEveley said.

“They get forward and score goals but they give everything as well and always get back in shape to cover angles and passes.

“When you’re young you do get caught out of position a few times because you want to do things on the front foot and do what you’re good at, but sometimes you have to remember it’s a team game and defensive responsibility is a part of that.

“The lads are slowly learning that and you can see over the last few games we have been a lot more solid and hard to beat.”

fans around me in DR and majority on social networking sites cant wait for a jay slip up, so they can rip into him. For me its totally unjust, he is by far our best defender and has been all season. Constant threat going forward and always available. And does whats needed of him defensively too.

Completely agree. His season started off a little shaky but he has got better and better. He's quite high profile, so when he does something that doesn't work out, like going forward on a run, the moaners in the Arkell's around me want him off. Pathetic.

One of the worst players ever to wear the town shirt, should've gone in the summer, never performed for us although not bad in the last couple of games. Only taken him two years

Sat next to his missus and little lad at Preston. The abuse he took from the moron sat behind me was shocking and well done to Mrs McEverley for telling him so.

I think Jay is a good, honest, experienced pro who we desperately need to keep in such a young squad.

Rarely post on here but I felt I needed to come on here to express bafflement at the abuse Jay receives. There are times when his crossing/forward play can be disappointing, but he's a full back! Personally he would be one of the first two or three names on the sheet, very good at the back, in the air and his positional play and covering play us superb. In fact, he often gets booed by some idiot in the South Stand for not getting back to cover other players mistakes. The attacking side of his game has improved and been tactically freed-up in the last few games, which have encouraged the "forward" droners, but IMO, his defensive play has been great since he joined us.

Interesting how we see things differently. I feel he has been poor from day one. He has the odd moment where I think he might be ok and then he goes back to not being so good in my opinion. I still wait with an open mind as to whether he is as good as people say. At the moment I feel he is only looking reasonable because there have been so many poor performing players around him. I'll be very happy to be proved wrong. Abusing any player is not on though.

Been going for 30. Years I ain't clueless I've seen some crap over the years and I believe Jay is not one of the better players I've seen, this is my opinion and that is the point of theses forums, I don't normally post anything because people like you just condem other posts instead of properly debating the point so I respond to your clueless with open yor eyes and realise what he is supposed to do in his position

At our level we are not going to get players who give 100% perfect performances every week. What you do get with Jay is 100% effort. We are all entitled to our opinions, that's what makes football such a great game, but I do not boo any players wearing my clubs shirt and never will. Keep your criticism for here and show your support or shut up at the game.

I'm not McEveley's biggest fan but a major thing in his favour is he is one of the few players in our side who always looks as if he wants to win. It's a shame that stands out so much.

He is slow. cannot cross a ball, always out of position and has a big gob that unsettles a lot of the team. Don't think him and Wes are muckers from the dialogue I have noticed.
