TYRELL Belford wants to see Wes Foderingham remain at Swindon Town despite the fact the number one’s departure could further his own career.
Nineteen-year-old Belford was the shootout hero on Tuesday night as Town progressed to the area final stage of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, but has yet to make his league debut for the Robins with Foderingham the undisputed number one at the County Ground.
Foderingham has been linked with a possible January departure from the County Ground, with Bournemouth believed to be interested, but Belford wants to see his teammate remain at the County Ground even if it blocks his path to regular league football.
“Wes and I get on really well, and Bedders and Fraser too, and Wes is a great character and a really good goalkeeper at this level,” he said.
“I’m sure he will go on to do higher things and I wish him all the best, but every time I play I have to put in a performance because the manager is relying on me and showing me the belief that I can go out there and do it.
“I appreciate that because this is my chance and I have to put everything into practice. Wes has played around 120 games so he’s done very well and there’s a lot to learn from there.
“I don’t want to see him leave because he’s good for the football club and he’s a top lad but if he does go and I step up, or they bring someone else in, then I will have to deal with that then.”
