HOCKEY: High-flying Wootton Bassett blitz Stroud 10-0
5:30am Thursday 19th December 2013 in Sport
WOOTTON Bassett hosted Stroud on Saturday and ran in 10 goals in a comprehensive win.
The home side took the lead within 14 seconds as Mark Turner fired home, before Kyle Barnes converted a short corner to double Bassett’s advantage.
The sustained pressure from Bassett prevented Stroud's midfield from creating any chances of note, and at the other end the home frontline was running riot.
Bassett added a third in the 13th minute through Turner before Barnes made it four. Ali Wood then blasted home the fifth just before half-time.
After the break Bassett refused to ease up. Craig McLauchline got his first goal for the club on debut 12 minutes into the period, while Jack Twine contributed his fourth goal in three games from the wing.
In the dying moments Barnes completed his hat-trick, only for Turner to outdo his teammate with a quickfire double to complete a 10-0 rout.
A combined Bassett A/B team beat Stroud 6-0. Lawrence Winter scored a hat-trick, with James Gregory picking up a brace and Milind Thapa scoring his first goal for the club.
Meanwhile, Wootton Bassett Ladies lost 3-2 to Phoenix Ranelagh in a friendly match on Saturday.
The Christmas spirit was evident in captain Emma Langdon’s decision to sport a Santa costume in the first half, but an competitive edge remained and twice Bassett came from behind to draw level thanks to goals from Emma Collison and Katy Cox.
However, Phoenix had the last laugh with the fifth and final strike of the match.
Bassett’s A side drew 5-5 with the same opponents, with Ellie Wood scoring a brace and Sue Lee, Millie Fairbanks and Rebekah Taylor also getting on the scoresheet.
Meanwhile, Swindon Hockey Club’s junior section are looking for local youngsters keen to learn the game or develop existing skills.
The club, which has produced 17 players who have been selected for the Wiltshire junior academy and one who has gone on to take part in the England Futures camp this year, offer free taster sessions for those who want to give hockey a try.
Of those currently on Swindon’s books, Bethany George, Charlotte George, Chloe Lewis and Hames Lewis have gone on to represent the South West at regional level.
