HELLENIC LEAGUE: Roberts delighted with Bassett's form

Swindon Advertiser: Wootton Bassett manager Jeff Roberts Wootton Bassett manager Jeff Roberts

WOOTTON Bassett boss Jeff Roberts is pleased with his side’s recent improvement which has seen a run of defeats turn into an unbeaten spell in the league lasting almost a month, writes CHRIS PANKS.

The Hellenic Premier side last lost in the league to Abingdon United on November 16 and have strung together some impressive results since, despite bowing out of the Wiltshire Senior Cup to Bemerton Heath Harlequins earlier this month.

Bassett held local rivals Highworth Town to a 1-1 draw on Saturday, taking the lead through Levi Cox before having to settle for a point against the title-chasers, after enduring a difficult start to the season during which they registered only five wins in their first 21 games.

Bassett’s league victory last Wednesday against Binfield was their first since October 9, although they are unbeaten in their last four games, and going into tomorrow’s match at home to Thame, Roberts said he is pleased with the improvement his side have made.

“We are capable of challenging the top teams and competing with them and beating them,” he said.

“But this year is mainly about stabilising.

“We’re starting to build a bit of confidence. The pressure is off in the dressing room a little bit after Wednesday’s result, which we completely deserved, and going to Highworth and getting a point.”

Roberts also revealed that he is looking to add a striker to his ranks to improve his range of striking options.

The Bassett boss refused to name his target, though he did confirm that the move could be completed within the “next seven to 10 days”, meaning he could be involved in the heavy fixture commitments over Christmas.
