Clarke believes he should have scored more
FORMER Town striker Leon Clarke believes he should have a few more goals to his name this season as he prepares to return to the County Ground tomorrow.
The 28-year-old left Wiltshire just weeks after arriving at the start of the 2011/12 season following a public spat with former Robins boss Paolo Di Canio, but after spells at Chesterfield, Charlton, Crawley and Scunthorpe has found his feet at Coventry and has scored 14 goals so far this season.
The former Wolves trainee has enjoyed a prolific partnership with homegrown City striker Callum Wilson, who has also netted 14 times, and although Clarke is pleased with the blossoming relationship he believes he should have found the net more often by now.
"It’s always nice to score and the partnership with Cal keeps growing and growing,” he said. “There’s a lot of goals between us now just before Christmas, and long may it continue.
“I think we linked up well at times and although it’s always good to score I felt I should have had a few more goals to be honest. I was feeling a little bit heavy legged and rusty after three weeks off.
“I know the manager said I had been looking sharp in training and in my running but playing games is completely different, so I was a bit disappointed I didn’t get more goals.”
Clarke is likely to get a hot reception from the County Ground faithful tomorrow and admitted he doesn’t look back at his brief stint in Wiltshire particularly fondly.
"It wasn’t the best time in my career,” he said. “I wasn’t there for very long and obviously after what happened I went to Chesterfield where I was prolific and then I went to Charlton after that.
“So I don’t have the fondest memories of Swindon, but that’s all in the past and I have to get on with the present and future.
“I look forward to any game, whether it’s a former club or anyone and hopefully the cup win will give the boys some more confidence.
“Swindon are a young team with some good players – several on loan from Tottenham who people have been speaking a lot about – so we have got to be at our best.”
