MILES Storey’s winner for Swindon Town against Coventry City on Saturday was especially pleasing for the young striker on a personal level.

Storey was released by Coventry City as a trainee, despite being given assurances he would get a scholarship at the Ricoh Arena, prior to being picked up by Swindon four years ago.

Therefore, the 19-year-old has an axe to grind with his old club and netting in the 86th minute to ensure all three League One points for his current side certainly meant a lot to him.

“It’s brilliant for me personally,” he said. “Obviously I was at Coventry just before I came to Swindon, when they were giving out scholarships and I was nailed on to get a scholarship from what they were saying but I had a couple of bad games and that was it.

“Since then I’ve come to Swindon and to get a goal against them is brilliant.

“I saw a couple of the lads I was there with.

“The right-back Cyrus (Christie) was in the youth team when I was there and there were a couple of lads in the stands. It was good to show them more than anything.”

Storey was introduced as a 70th-minute substitute my manager Mark Cooper – his first competitive appearance since the defeat to Wolves in September.

“Though three months on the sidelines might have been frustrating for the Brummie, he’s not complaining.

“The way the team has been playing it’s been tough for me to be involved,” he said. “With the way we play, with some of the forward players we’ve got – Pritch (Alex Pritchard), Dany N’Guessan, Nicky (Ajose) – there are some great players so I’ve had to bide my time.

“I was carrying an injury before I went to Salisbury and once we knew what it was we got rid of it.

“I’ve got my sharpness back now and the way I play is all about pace, and the injury was limiting me.

“Now that’s gone I feel sharp again.”

Like most associated with Town, Storey was delighted with victory over one of the better sides Swindon have faced in 2013/14.

“Coventry are one of the best teams we’ve played this year and if they hadn’t had their 10-point deduction they’d be up in the play-offs maybe even more.

“It’s a hard team to come up against and it showed character to come back,” he said.

“We changed our style a bit when I came on.

“Playing with Range, we wins a lot of flick-ons.

“With the way we play you always know a goal could come from anywhere – defenders, wingers, strikers, centre-mids.”
