SWINDON TOWN: Ranger departure inches closer

Swindon Advertiser: Nile Ranger, left Nile Ranger, left

SWINDON Town are expected to formally announce the departure of Nile Ranger this week.

The striker, whose regular absences from training have led Town to the point of no return, is understood to be in line to have his contract cancelled imminently.

The Advertiser understands the club will part ways with the former Newcastle forward by mutual consent, with Swindon not having to hand over severance pay to the 22-year-old.

Scheduled talks with the player’s representatives and the PFA were postponed last Thursday and had been due to take place today, but it is believed that the respective parties have tried to come to an agreement prior to the meeting.

With Nicky Ajose having returned to Peterborough from his loan spell and Miles Storey out injured, manager Mark Cooper has limited striking options ahead of this weekend’s visit of Posh.

Town are believed to be looking at Brighton’s George Barker as a potential signing, but Cooper is not about to make any knee-jerk reactions in the transfer market.

“It’s pretty quiet at the moment. It’s well-documented that we’re not going to go out and spend loads of money on someone that’s not right or it’s a rush,” he told the local press on Monday. “We’re going to take our time and make sure, if we do get one, it’s the right type.

“It can mean that some clubs are not ready to loan their players out just yet or it could mean somebody has been on loan and they want to have another look at them before they decide whether to send them back out. There are a lot of contributing factors and we’re waiting for everything to come together.

“We know what we’re looking for and it’s just a question of the timing and making sure the players are available.

“There is no set agenda where we have to wait. We could get a phone call and it could get done this afternoon. We’re very realistic about it and we’d like to get one in before Saturday of course but we’re not going to sign somebody for the sake of it.

“I wouldn’t say it’s desperate but we need a centre forward, everybody will tell you that at the football club.“We’re actively looking and trying to get one in before the weekend.”

Well without any strikers is say we are desperate but we have to bring in the right calibre of player. Looking at the league table only 10 points now between us and the teams near the bottom and we need to start pulling away. From those teams. There are some very poor teams above us ie port vale who are a terrible side but our inconsistency and poor away form is the major factor and our constant leaking of poor goals at the back.
I hope we rectify this problem for the second half of the season. I can see Bristol City and sheff utd putting runs together and unless we get it right it could be a worrying second part of the season.

Good luck to Nile, class player but wrong headspace for him right now, I just pray we dont revert back to the 4-6-0 because as Le God says, we need to make that 10 point gap a lot bigger....

It sounds like the replacement for Ranger is already identified and seemingly we are waiting to see if clubs are going to send them out on loan or not, so buying a replacement does not seem to be on the agenda. Would have thought Paddy Madden's situation has not changed and with only 3 weeks left of the transfer window, i would have thought bringing someone like him in sooner than later will be a decisive factor.

On another point I see Gillingham did not want to renew the loan of Danny Holland, if he stayed fit would love to see him back, also Liam Ridehalgh has returned to Huddersfield, with Jay out for a month, he would be a good replacement for us to have to bolster our shaky defence.

Thanks for that MD, hadn't seen that update. Another decent player who wanted to stay shown the exit by the Italian.

Signing a young striker with potential isn't desperate, it could be a good bit of business and at least we're not spending huge sums. If he starts banging goals in I take it you'll stick with your assessment of Cooper and Power as muppets? Slagging the player off before he's even kicked a ball in anger is a bit much.

We will need to draft in some other players but please keep things in proportion, and try to add something constructive to the proceedings. With respect I could accept your negativity if you could justify what you're saying, but the "muppets" type comments really tell us nothing. How are they muppets in your estimation? I think Cooper's doing a decent job to be honest, Power I'll reserve judgement on.
